About Us
Our company is a new Ocean Stewardship and Biotechnology company. In doing world class ocean science we discover and create knowledge to foster understanding necessary to practice stewardship of ocean pastures. Ocean pastures are much like pastures and ranges found on land; they are complex ecological communities of plants and animals however the “grass” of our ocean pasture is phyto-plankton. This ‘Tang Gwan’ ocean pasture requires the same sort of caring management as terrestrial range and pasture lands including: resource surveys, ecosystem management through multiple use planning, restoration of damaged regions, and careful sustainable harvests. As stewards of our living pastures a cornucopia of rewards become available. As a properly run private partnership company, empowered and funded by the Old Massett Village Council (the majority stockholder), naturally we are making our best efforts to exercise our fiduciary responsibility to look for every means by which we may recover and make good the investments made in the company by its shareholders.
We’ve been researching the literature, making scientific measurements, and collecting samples in the ocean west of Haida Gwaii for well over a year. As of December we’ve entered our 13th month of active presence taking physical samples and measurements in our study region which includes the ocean to the west of Haida Gwaii. In the winter months (2011-2012) using ships of opportunity we collected data and water samples. These were brought to our Vancouver research office and also sent to outside third party laboratories for analysis. In June we really ramped up the our science program with our Slocum Glider “science dream machines.” The first, Nuncayoss, (Haida meaning “the one I found”) was sent in June from Vancouver Island programmed to glide north to the ocean west of Haida Gwaii and the famous Haida Eddy, it phoned home every 3 hours with discrete measurements. With the help of leading scientists in institutional labs across North America we’ve been working on that data, it’s already yielded new understandings of eddies never before observed or even imagined.
In July when our research ship and science team set sail and until its return in September more than a hundred million new discrete measurements and samples were collected (168 million and counting). Even today new observations and measurements continue to pour in from instruments we deployed in a large ocean area stretching from Vancouver Island to the Northern tip of Haida Gwaii and from close to shore to hundreds of kilometers to the west. Every day thousands of discrete measurements arrive at the HSRC research facility in Vancouver. Sampling devices were left behind sea anchored in the bloom, these will hopefully be retrieved over time to provide an integrated composite measurement. This library of measurements once processed and reviewed will become the words in our book of knowledge on the Tang Gwan. as we pour through the samples and measurement collection every day our scientist are frequently thrilled by discovery, we’re sure new species of life never seen before are within the collection but its is the sheer magnitude of knowledge we see that will guide us and become chapters of our Tang Gwan book, as those chapters are ready we’ll be sharing this new village wisdom with the world. Old Massett is a province and village on the northern end of the islands forming half of Haida Gwaii. According to legend, Haida Gwaii, our misty isles lie at the edge of the world and is the place where time began. It’s hard to miss the spiritual, even mystical, nature of the place.

Our company draws its strength and competence from the traditional ties its people have to homes of land and sea as well as the best of modern world understanding of science and technology. To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe. We are working to achieve a state of wisdom in, with, and on behalf of the natural world and all its inhabitants… plants, animals, people, and those mythical spiritual in-betweens like “Salmon Boy.”
