Careers
We are an Ocean Biotech R&D company. We are working to create a new professional discipline namely that of ocean pasture science and management — something akin to the science and stewardship on behalf of natural terrestrial pastures and ranges that have been practiced for centuries. We think it is high time to show we are stewards of the ocean pastures not merely hunters. During 2012 we will be hiring professional, technical, and general business staff for our main R&D facilities in Vancouver. Some work may involve travel to satellite facilities on the land and seas of Haida Gwaii.
If you think you share a kindred spirit with us and have skills we might need please send an email and resume introducing yourself to creekwoman@hsrc1.com . We promise to read it thoughtfully.

Pelagic Plankton Scientist(s) – Knowledge of and experience in shipboard sampling and studies utilizing: plankton tows of various sorts, pump sampling, optical plankton counting, multi-beam sonar for the study of deep scattering layer meso-zooplankton, and spectral studies of chlorophyll using sub-surface, ship mounted, and satellite data sources. We’ll be using the data and understanding we obtain to create and apply ocean pasture models on defined regions of the NE Pacific. Office/lab home base in Vancouver, BC. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
General Ocean Scientist(s) - Biological Chemical oceanographer with experience and competence in setting up and managing shipboard sampling covering a wide range of pelagic ocean parameters — physical, chemical, and biological. Required skill set: Solid understanding of the use of satellite resources and integration of data collected on ship to calibrate and correlate satellite data sets. We expect to feed a wide range of data to specific models we are building and to apply that data to hindcasting and forecasting of ocean pasture conditions. We also expect to engage in a meta-analysis of fisheries data that may reflect on species response to changing ocean pasture conditions, such as studies of catch reports and scale studies of selected salmonids and other species. Office/lab home base in Vancouver, BC. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Research Group Manager / Researcher / Admin – We are seeking a multi-talented individual willing and able to work with us covering several key activities in our new start-up company. We need this person to be responsible for research group management, Making decisions and overseeing efficient operational procedures for a research office of up to 15. Time will be largely spent engaging in assisting with directed ocean research, including extensive use of research literature and internet sources. At times this individual will be called on to do routine and perhaps mundane office administrative tasks as well. Office/lab home base in Vancouver, BC. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Ocean Science Researchers / Interns – We are seeking paid interns with a background and(or) keen interest in ocean and marine science. Their work will involve working as directed by senior science personnel to assist in obtaining and using modern ocean science instruments for installation and operation in our labs and on our research ship and similar activities relating to remote data sets. Individuals may be called upon to spend considerable time at sea engaged in the study of pelagic phytoplankton. Sea legs will be needed or grown. Office/lab home base in Vancouver, BC. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Ocean Engineering, Electronics, and Computer Systems – Engineers, Techs, Geeks – We are seeking inventive people with the ability and desire to create, copy, build, and utilize of a variety of small scientific tools that may be deployed in the ocean environment on shore, on ship, towed beneath the surface and aerially, and as autonomous drifters and gliders in pelagic ocean environments. Candidates must be able to integrate and breadboard simple data gathering sensors and probes to battery/solar powered data logging, and reporting systems. Do you speak Arduino or it’s equivalent? Also able to do work with shop tools to build in PVC and Polycarbonate water and pressure tight vessels to hold such instrument packages. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Marine Captain, Officers, and Crew - In early 2012 we will be seeking qualified ship board captain, officers and crew to operate a moderate size oceanographic research vessel (140ft). These personnel must have knowledge and experience in operating a ship focused entirely on oceanographic science conducted by on board ocean scientists and technicians. The chief scientist will direct ship operations and the captain, officers, and crew work to support the chief scientist and operate the ship in a safe and economical fashion. Officers and crew of the ship will be called on at times to assist in the scientific work which involves extra care, attention to details, and at times delicacy. Individuals with education and/or experience in marine science will have a hiring advantage. Send an email introducing yourself and CV and we’ll return a more comprehensive job description. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
Marine Science Academic Collaborators – We are actively seeking to establish both short term and long term contract research collaborations with academic based marine scientists in a number of disciplines including: plankton taxonomy; studies of the deep scattering layer; design, construction and use of AUV’s in the form of drifters and gliders; modelling of the vertical re-distribution of plankton biomass and its derivative forms into time series bioclines; real time observation and tracking of pelagic eddies especially the Haida and Sitka eddies; salmon and other pelagic species ocean distribution and use patterns; and more… We are especially interested in affiliations with institutions that have experience with industry research collaborations.
